Green School

Green School

Green-Schools, operated in Ireland by An Taisce, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment. St. Mary’s was the first secondary school in Ireland to be awarded a Green Flag in 1999 and this was renewed every two years.

In recent years our efforts have been focused on reducing our waste, especially our use of single use plastics, in particular plastic bottles. These have now been banned in St. Mary’s and with the purchase of thirty new bins our waste is now divided appropriately.

Recently, the members of the Green school Committee, our school caretaker and their teacher had a tour of the incinerator in Dublin where students learnt what happens to our black bin waste.
